Live and Let Live (family motto)
If this is your first time (or not) visiting this page please send me an e-mail. In the past few years, I have found Weild's/Wield's all over the world. There are Weild's in Scotland, primarily around Annan, Gretna, and Dumfries but also England, Wales, the USA, Australia, Brazil and my home Canada.  There are Weild's involved in several walks of life, the clergy, law, acting, graphic arts, education, high technology, banking, investments, medicine, engineering, commerce, real estate, customer service, airline industry, and many, many more.  Some are retired some have just been born.   There are famous Weilds too, the US Naval Academy Observatory (Correct me, but I think there is  a presidential home there)  is named in honor of Rear Admiral William Harkness who was actually a son of a Weild. The origin of the name, I am told is "dweller of the wood" in Gaelic.  The earliest recorded reference I have found of the name "Weild" seems to be in the 1400's and 1500's. Although I'm told the first Weild, shows up in 1066 as having marched with William the Conqueror and again in 1306 the name appears as one of Robert Bruce's marchers. This might indicate, according to Burke's Peerage, that the first Weild was a Norman.

I started this page a few years ago thinking that there were maybe 15 or 20 Weild's and/or Wield's in the world, but have since been proven otherwise.  It is on a list of the 50 rarest names in the UK.   According to Burke's Peerage (Year??) there were 250 Weilds throughout the world.  I am amazed as to the number of Weild's who have contacted me in the past 10 years, largely due to the internet. It's a small world after all.

Again, welcome and drop me a line!

Oh yes, there historically has been some confusion between the spelling of the surname. Many families (including my own) spell it both Weild, and Wield. There are both Wield's and Weilds buried in cemetaries in and around Annan, Gretna Green and Dumfries. There are Wield's (unrelated) in Wisconsin believed to be from Germany. There is a village in England (Wield) again, not likely related.

If you are a Weild, you are indeed in the right place but If you are a truly a Wield you may wish to go here.

I am currently interested in finding a clan association and more information on the family crest. By the motto "Vive ut Vivas" or Vive et Vivas, there may be a connection with Clan Hall. But Im not sure of this. can any Weild's provide some insight? email me
